Date: 8th May 2016

Led by Conservation IG, 19 SAS students and 2 staff participated in ‘Operation We Cleanup’ on the 8th of May morning. Coordinated by the Public Hygiene Council (PHC), this mass exercise is where the community come together to clean various location across the island and reaffirm their commitment the keep the environment litter-free. Here are some of the students' thoughts on the program.

“It was my first time picking up litter with a group of people. Through this activity it made me realize how tiring and tough it is to be picking up litter for just 2 hours which makes me wonder how the cleaners are able to do it for the entire day. We should all think twice before littering and as a member of conservation IG and environmental science student I should do my part in keeping Singapore clean so that I can be a role model for the people around me” – Leong Min Rou

“Going through this meaningful event conducted by Conservation IG, I feel that many people still lack the awareness about taking care of their environment” – Christopher

“After participating in this event, I finally understand the hard work of being a cleaner. Although some people feel that their job is low class, I am very grateful to them. Without them, Singapore would not be a clean and green country so well-known to others. It is tiring picking up rubbish under the hot sun, but I enjoyed the process as I am able to contribute to the environment” – Ling Kuan Yee

“Today was a meaningful way to spend the Sunday morning. I was appalled to discover the large amount of rubbish. I now realise that many of us have been taking for granted the hard work of a cleaner. As they work to keep our surroundings clean. I would encourage such activities to be carried out and to involve more students” – Malcolm Luther Ng

We live in co-existence with the environment. If we do not keep the environment clean, who will? #keepSGclean :)
